Dress for Your Shape: Curvy

There are many different body types, but the common goal is to dress to enhance your hourglass shape. Women who fall in the curvy and voluptuous category are given multiple options to accent their feminine form – think Sophia Loren (size 10), Christina Hendricks (size 14) or Adele (size 14-16).

When in doubt, view the size guide and fit notes on each of our dresses, or contact one of our expert stylists to get guidance on your specific sizing.

A common misconception about the curvy body type is it is not meant for fitted, waist defining, or tailored clothing. In fact, just the opposite is true – the curvy body has the ability to dazzle when it is enhanced rather than hidden.

Here are a few tips from our favorite curvy style icons:

  1. Define your waist (belts and cinched waists are your best friends)
  2. Avoid clothing with excess material as they add bulk
  3. Gravitate towards high waistlines as they elongate your body
  4. On a dressy occasion, elongate your legs by wearing pointed toe shoes
  5. Avoid wide and most especially, pleated accordion skirts as they add bulk to your frame
  6. Wear V-necklines to elongate your upper body
  7. Don’t be afraid to wear some jewelry (or bright lipstick) as statement earrings or necklaces will draw attention to your face and bracelets to your wrist

Sophia Loren

As a beautiful Italian actress, Sophia knew how to dress to present a flawless, yet very attractive appearance. She loved her curves and made the women of the world wish they had more.

Here Sophia highlights her waist by cinching a contrasting colored belt. Her upper torso is elongated with the v-neckline. This look reminds us of the Alice faux wrap dress.

In this look, Sophia stayed classic with a high waistline that nipped in to accentuate the hourglass figure so many curvy women can achieve with a tailored look. We’d suggest pairing our classic little black dress the Jackie with a large belt for a similar look.

Adele

With a voice beyond compare, Adele knows how to dazzle on the stage not only with her voice, but also with her fashion choices. Her style reminds us of a classic English rose with a modern twist.

In this dress, Adele shows the slimming effect of a high cinched waistline with an A-line skirt. Her shoes are pointed to elongate her legs. Even though she’s wearing black here, this dress is giving us major Elisabeth vibes.

Maxi dresses can be a great way for a curvy woman to give a sleek look. Here Adele showed off her waist and drew attention to her face by a pop of bright lipstick. We’d suggest the wonderfully flowing Sophia in navy paired with statement earrings and bright lipstick for a similar look. Keep in mind, you can accessorize any dress with a belt rather than the sash!

Christina Hendricks

She starred in sitcom about the 1950’s and understands vintage style like nobody else. You typically can catch Christina accenting her curves with a pencil skirt or other high waisted dresses.

Here, Christina wears a fitted dress with statement earrings. This look is perfect for a cocktail party and shows that she is confident in her shape. The high waist reminds us of the elegant and comfortable Clemy dress. We can envision Christina rocking the Clemy with a pair of gorgeous gold earrings.

Since she’s the queen of vintage, she’s not afraid to rock a peter pan collar from time to time. A collared dress gives a sweet and feminine look while drawing attention to your face and neck. Give the adorable and chic Adeline dress a try for this amazing look.

I was quite disappointed with this…the idea are kind of nice, but V-necks and pencil skirts don’t sound very Catholic…

It surprises me that a “traddie” clothes company would encourage V-necks, pencil skirts…

Wouldn’t it hurt to make the dresses a little longer (mid-calf)? I don’t get why everything has to be “right on the line”…
I am a girl of almost fifteen, and when my friends and I heard about Paris Bloom, we got all excited, only to find out that many of the dresses you sell would not be approved by our moms. I am saving up for one, though.

None of my friends would dress like the pictures. Neither would I.

We follow the Vatican standards for modesty as posted outside St. Peter’s Basilica. These photos are for inspiration. There is nothing wrong with a v-neck like our Elisabeth dress. Nor is there anything wrong with a pencil or straight skirt as long as it doesn’t overly hug the hips. Please keep in mind the average U.S. woman is just under 5’4″. Many of our customers are shorter than that. If these styles were any longer, these women would be swimming in them. If you look at our products, we feel there is nothing wrong or immodest with them. They are all classy and feminine. And if you are looking for complete coverage, our Sofia maxi dress is a gorgeous dress and goes all the way to the wrists and ankles.

Well said Anna. You’re 15 and I’m 55 but I agree with you completely. Disappointing. Don’t seem to comply with Catholic standards of modesty without the frump I was so looking forward to. Lets remain Catholic first. What would Our Lady think? She’s our model and icon of Catholic style!
